Programmes

  • Wildlife Health Monitoring Program:
Long-term health monitoring of wildlife as an early warning system for disease outbreaks prevents disease transmission between people, wildlife and livestock recording gorilla observations on PDAs and analysis of gorilla samples at the CTPH Field Clinic for Mountain Gorillas and Other Animal Species.
  • Human Public Health Program:
Community based health care and public awareness
campaigns regarding good hygiene and the risks of disease transmission between people, wildlife and livestock include Community Based Direct Observation Treatments for TB, drama shows, brochures and health messages.
  • Information, Education and Communication Program:
Conservation Through Public Health Telecentre transforms geographic inaccessibility from a constraint into a resource by leveraging the ecotourism business need for remote telecentres into financial support for health promotion, income generation, and environmental protection. The model has proven its success in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park where its multimedia, solar powered, high speed wireless Internet access, income-producing, gorilla monitoring and human health project achieved Finalist status in the 2006 Stockholm Challenge (Environment Category) and was featured on BBC’s Go Digital and CNN World Report. In 2008, CTPH replicated and scaled up the Bwindi model, targeting the communities that border Queen Elizabeth National Park. The joint Uganda Wildlife Authority Visitor Centre/CTPH Telecentre was officially launched by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
